19 Airplanes

This work has evolved in fits and starts over the years, first appearing as a set of twenty still images, then as a video, then as an iPad app—way back when the iPad was new, the first art-as-app that I am aware of—and now back again as a set of still images, nineteen in number.

The source imagery comes from a series of videos I made on Digital8 tape—sort of a transitional technology between tape and memory cards—of passenger airplanes flying to and from three major airports in the Washington, DC area, their flight paths crossing more or less directly above my home in Maryland. I shot for two or three weeks thinking I was doing one project then, after September 11, 2001, knowing I was doing another.
